Bra Fit Check

A calculator result is only a starting point. Use this checklist after trying a bra to see whether the band, cups, straps, underwire and centre gore work for your body and the bra's design.

Band

The band should sit roughly level around your body and feel firm without painful pressure. If it rides up, the band may be too loose. If it digs painfully, reassess the band and cup fit together.

Cups

Look for obvious breast tissue spilling out, persistent gaping, wrinkling or the cup cutting into tissue. Cup shape matters, so a problem is not always solved by simply changing size.

Straps

Straps should support without digging in or constantly falling off. They should not be carrying all the support; a correctly fitting band does most of that work.

Centre gore

On many underwired styles, the centre gore should sit close to the sternum. Some breast shapes and bra designs fit differently, so judge the gore together with the cup construction.

Common fit problems

Band rides up

The band may be too loose, the straps may be over-tightened, or the bra may have stretched. Try a firmer band after confirming the cups fit.

Band feels too tight

Check whether the cups are too small first. A cup that is too small can pull the band tighter. If the cups fit, a sister size with a larger band may be worth trying.

Cup spills

Overflow at the top, sides or centre can indicate that the cup is too small or that the cup shape does not suit your breast shape.

Cup gaps

Gapping can come from a cup that is too large, a shallow/deep shape mismatch, or a style that does not follow your breast shape.

Straps dig or fall

Check the band first. If the band is not providing enough support, tightening the straps can create discomfort without fixing the underlying issue.

Underwire hurts

Persistent digging can relate to cup size, wire width, wire shape or placement. A different style may fit better even at the same nominal size.

A simple fit-check sequence

  1. Put the bra on with the band level and the cups positioned correctly.
  2. Check the band before over-tightening the straps.
  3. Check for cup overflow, gaping or breast tissue being pushed out.
  4. Check the centre gore and underwire placement if the style has them.
  5. Move your arms and torso normally and reassess comfort.
Fit problems are not always solved by changing size. A different bra shape, wire width or fabric can fit better at the same nominal size.
